Top Dressing vs. Soil Amending: What’s the Difference and Which One Do You Need?

Whether you’re maintaining a lush lawn or starting fresh with new sod, choosing the right soil application makes all the difference. At JSJ Unlimited, we get this question a lot — and it’s a good one. Top dressing and soil amending might sound similar, but they serve very different purposes. Here’s everything you need to know to get it right the first time.

What is Top Dressing

Top dressing is the process of applying a thin layer of material over existing, established turf or sod. It’s also used for new installs but at a later time — it’s a maintenance treatment designed to improve the health and appearance of a lawn that’s already growing.

When to Use It:
-Your lawn is established and already growing
-You want to improve soil quality without disturbing existing grass
-You need to level out low spots or uneven areas

How It Works:
Top dressing material is spread directly over your existing grass at a rate of 0.5 to 0.75 cubic yards per 1,000 square feet. At this rate, you’ll achieve approximately a 1/4-inch layer over the turf — thin enough that the grass grows right through it without being smothered.

Leveling with Sand:
If you have areas of your lawn that are uneven or have low spots, top dressing can be combined with sand. This sand blend helps fill in dips and grade the surface, resulting in a smoother, more uniform lawn over time.

What is Soil Amending

Soil amending is a more significant soil preparation process. It involves incorporating high-quality organic material deep into the ground to create the ideal root environment before planting or as part of a full renovation. Think of it as building a strong foundation for your lawn or landscaping.

When to Use It:
-You’re installing new sod or landscaping and want to maximize establishment success
-You’re renovating an existing lawn and starting essentially from scratch
-Your existing soil is poor quality, compacted, or lacks the nutrients and structure plants need

How It Works:

Unlike top dressing, soil amending involves working the material into the ground. Here’s the process:

Apply COMAND at a rate of 4 cubic yards per 1,000 square feet — this achieves approximately a 1-inch layer across the area.
Till the material to a 6-inch depth, thoroughly blending it into the existing soil.

The result is an improved root zone throughout the top 6 inches of your soil profile — the critical zone where grass roots develop and anchor.

This process transforms subpar native soil into a productive growing medium, giving your new sod or landscape plants the best possible start.
